Snow Causes Havoc

Date Published: 2nd February 2009

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) has issued some advice today following widespread havoc.

Travel Insurance
For those travelling by air, delays at snowbound airports are usually covered. Typically cover begins after passengers have been delayed for a period of time specified in their policy (typically either or 12 hours). Some policies may pay for missed flights because a passenger is unable to reach the airport due to bad weather. Cancellation of actual flights due to bad weather is unlikely to be covered – insurance typically only covers passengers if they have to cancel their flight due to events like illness or redundancy. Travellers should check details of their own policy, as cover does vary. If in doubt talk to your insurance company or broker, who will be able to explain what is covered.

Household Insurance
Closer to home snow damage may be covered under the ‘storm’ provision within buildings insurance policies. Policy holders should contact their insurance company or broker for information and advice.

Frozen pipes and water tanks tend to be the most likely affected by sub-zero temperatures. Check the lagging on both, if you have enough constant heating in the house, it will prevent the water tank from freezing.

Motor Insurance
Accidents caused by snow or ice will be covered under comprehensive motor insurance policies. The cost of breakdowns or vehicles not starting is not covered. Unfortunately flat batteries are the main cause of havoc followed by cars turning over but refusing to start up.
